Many fans excited for the upcoming Deadpool movie have wondered exactly how closely the film will tie into the popular X-Men franchise, and now thanks to Simon Kinberg, they have an answer.
Kinberg, who wrote and produced X-Men: Days Of Future Past, spoke with Comicbook.com about the X-Men films, and what their relationship with the Deadpool movie will be. According to him, Deadpool will be part of a much larger cinematic universe that will be shared with the X-Men movies, much in the same way that Marvel’s hugely successful films work under the umbrella of overarching storylines.
“There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now, and ‘Deadpool’ obviously fits into that. So yeah, I guess I would say it’s part of certainly an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with telling a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these ‘X-Men’ movies at Fox.”
As Screenrant notes, the fact that Deadpool will tie into the larger X-Men universe opens up a multitude of storytelling possibilities, including crossovers with a number of other characters. It will also likely help the studio market Deadpool to casual fans and those only familiar with the character from his previous on-screen portrayal in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Conformation of the tie-in may also signal that Deadpool is set to have a PG-13 rating in order to better co-exist in the X-Men universe. As The Inquisitr previously noted, Deadpool comics often feature a level of sexuality and violence that would translate to an on-screen R rating, leading many fans to fear that the movie wouldn’t be true to the media that has made the “Merc with a Mouth” such a popular character. In July, CGI test footage of Deadpool leaked online, which appeared to hold true to the R rating that many fans expect.
While the original script for Deadpool was said to be detached from the X-Men universe, the conformation that they will tie together also makes a shared, overarching narrative a real possibility.
Deadpool opens in theaters on February 12, 2016.
