#OffTheAir @djskee Quits Radio!

There’s been some big news recently in the hip-hop radio circuit, from Angie Martinez’s move to Power 105.1 to Mister Cee’s drama at Hot 97. The latest is an unfortunate announcement from DJ Skee.

The 30-year-old radio personality announced in a video released today that he’s quitting radio, leaving behind KIIS FM and SiriusXM Radio’s Hip-Hop Nation. His announcement doesn’t come with the overlong thank you, emotional farewell or the “It’s time to move on to bigger and better things” explanation. He keeps it honest and simple: “Radio sucks.”

In the video announcement, DJ Skee explains that he came up loving radio, but grew tired of defending it against complaints about the commercials and lack of variety.

“Today six companies control 90 percent of the media airwaves, and I believe these corporations have sucked the life out of it,” DJ Skee states.

DJ Skee’s news comes from a place of passion rather than disillusionment. He explains that he refuses to compromise his ethics for the sake of satisfying the higher ups.

“Despite having this freedom that very few DJs have, I still feel boxed in by the rules and the system itself,” DJ Skee says. “I never have or will compromise my credibility, and I’ve lost out on opportunities because of that.”

This doesn’t mean DJ Skee, who’s known for helping break artists like Kendrick Lamar and Lorde, will completely recede from media. He closes off the video saying that he will push forward, and his followers should aim to do the same. Skee even hints at a big project he has in the works.

“With anything you do in life, never settle,” DJ Skee shares. “Always strive for greatness.”
